Why Your Google Reviews Keep Disappearing and What to Do About It

One of the most common questions we get from clients: “My Google reviews are gone. Did someone delete them?” The answer is almost never what people expect. Let’s break it down.

Your Reviews Are Your Digital Storefront

At Webegin, we work with small and micro businesses every day  cleaning companies, law firms, restaurants, beauty salons, contractors  and across every segment, Google reviews are one of the first things new customers check before picking up the phone.

Before your website. Before your price. Before your portfolio.

Your star rating and review count are often the very first impression a stranger has of your business. Losing even a few reviews can quietly hurt your Google ranking and make potential customers hesitate. That’s why understanding why reviews disappear is the first step to protecting what you’ve built.

Why Google Reviews Are Suddenly Disappearing

Why Does Google Remove Reviews?

Google actively monitors reviews to maintain trust in its platform. Reviews don’t vanish randomly  they’re removed for specific reasons. Here are the most common culprits we see with our clients:

1. The Review Violated Google’s Content Policy

Any review containing offensive language, hate speech, or overly promotional content can be removed automatically  positive or negative. Google’s filters don’t take sides; they enforce policy across the board.

2. The Review Contained Private Information

If a reviewer accidentally included someone’s personal details  a phone number, address, or other identifying information  Google removes the review to protect privacy. Even if the reviewer meant well, the result is the same.

3. An Employee Left the Review

This one surprises a lot of business owners. Reviews from current or former employees are treated as a conflict of interest and removed regularly. Never ask your team to post reviews  it backfires.

4. Google Flagged It as Fake

Google’s algorithms detect patterns that suggest inauthentic activity: sudden spikes in reviews, accounts with no posting history, or reviews that look purchased. These sweeps can sometimes catch legitimate reviews too  which brings us to reason six.

5. The Customer Deleted It

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. The reviewer changed their mind, deleted their Google account, or edited the review in a way that triggered removal. Nothing you did wrong  just the way it goes.

6. A Spam Filter False Positive

Google’s automated system isn’t perfect. Legitimate reviews sometimes get caught in filters, especially when multiple customers review around the same time or from the same location  like after a big event or a job site visit.

How to Find and Recover Removed Reviews

Google doesn’t erase removed reviews entirely. As the business owner, you can still see them. Here’s how:

Step 1  Check your Google Business Profile dashboard Log in and go to your reviews section. Removed reviews appear with the label “This review has been removed”  still there, just hidden from the public.

Step 2  Search your business on Google Maps Sign in with your business account, search for your business, and tap through to your full review list. The same label will appear on removed reviews.

Step 3  Reach out to the reviewer If the removal was triggered by language or content that can be fixed, politely let the customer know and ask them to repost a revised version. Google will reconsider once the review is updated.

Step 4  File an appeal with Google Business Support If you believe a legitimate review was removed by mistake, contact Google Business Support directly. Explain your case clearly  if your reasoning is valid, Google can reinstate the review.

Webegin tip: Our team handles reputation appeals and Google Business Profile management for clients who don’t want to deal with this themselves. It’s part of our Review & Reputation Management service.

The Real Solution: Keep New Reviews Coming

Recovering lost reviews is useful, but it’s not a strategy. The businesses that maintain strong Google profiles don’t just fix what’s broken, they build a consistent flow of genuine reviews so that losing a few here and there doesn’t hurt.

Here’s what actually works:

Create a Direct Review Link

Google lets you generate a short link that drops customers straight into your review form. Put it on your website, in your email footer, on printed receipts, in SMS follow-ups  anywhere your customers are after a good experience.

Ask at the Right Moment

Timing matters more than frequency. The best time to request a review is right after a positive interaction is done, the customer says “great work,” you’re still in the conversation. That’s the moment. Don’t wait for a bulk email blast a week later.

Add a Review CTA to Your Website Footer

A persistent, low-pressure link in your footer keeps the door open for customers who meant to leave a review and just forgot. Small friction reduction, real results.

Respond to Every Review You Receive

Responding to reviews  positive and negative  signals to Google that your business is active and engaged. It also shows prospective customers that you’re the kind of business that cares. Consistent responders attract more reviews over time.
